Visual Style Study. Borderlands, Mirror's Edge, MadWorld

Hi everyone! So I have been doing studies on visual styles for a university project. All C&C is Welcome!

I am wondering what people think about including them into my portfolio? Are these type of studies relevant to an employer?

Thanks Danny! :)

Borderlands - Emulation Style

This is my "Borderlands" Study. I used the Borderlands Art dump as reference and I tried to emulate the style as much as I could. I used a Normal Map and I hand-painted the texture.

Mirror's Edge - Realistic Style

From my research I have found that the developers tried to make the visuals of "Mirror's Edge" as clean and simple as possible. So for the purposes of my Realistic Style I decided to add dirt and rust to make it more interesting. I used Substance Painter and this is one of my first time using PBR texturing.

MadWorld - Abstract Study

For this study I was not able to find much information about Platinum game's workflow. So I tried my best to examine the game's environment and assets to recreate it.

Your borderlands one is the most successful. For Mirror's Edge you really gotta tone down the intensity of the dirt. Its something that I agree would be included in a mirrors edge texture but it needs to be more subtle. Take a close look at real lockers, your missing details like the metal trim around the corners, number plate or decal, and general scuffs or scratches. But remember to keep things subtle as mirror's edge is a very clean world

cgartland, thank you for your post, I agree!
I think the normal map for rust and dirt is quite strong, especially for the world of mirror's edge. That locker was actually used for another project as well that is quite dirty, this is way I decided to use so much dirt.

I am starting the think the whole scene may be to dirty...

I am going to look at toning it down in substance painter. Thanks again.

I'd say, like the one above, that the mirrors edge one looks way to grimy. Keep in mind that the thing about mirrors edge is that they used highly saturated colors and everything looked extremely polished and sterile, almost like a lab environment. If you look at the picture for example, it's pretty much colored white with very contrasted buildings of other colors.
