Everyone, I've been doing a little research, because I'm about to start diving into mari at work, and seeing as Automatic UDMI packing is going to be a thing in Modo 901. I've begun rading into What UDMI's are.
My first impression is taht they are superior to UV's. You can have a mesh with multiple resolutions. IT looks like You can accomplish more on a texture with UDMI's.
Are UDMI's experimental, or not commonly used?
IF so why not?

Why can't you just detach the face uv island and scale it up till it takes necessary pixel density. Then re-pack.
You don't need udim for that actually.
