Hi guys, so i have been working on this MP5K for a while now and i think i have come to a point where i am ok with it, not to happy, i know there is much room for improvement and i would like to hear what you guys think i could do to improve it, i am using Substance Painter to texture.
This looks pretty good but I think your presentation is letting it down a bit. With a stronger presentation and lighting setup, you could really make those materials pop off the page more.
Your high poly renders do this very well and would like to see that same look on the game res renders.
So i have been working on this a little bit and this is what i have come up with so far, not to happy with it but i feel like i could be going on the right track.
I think you have to rework the ABS Plastic. I think it looks to grungy.
Also the Metal looks on some Spots some Kind of "Blobby"
On this Spots, the Damage is also to high.
I think the wear overall is pretty good, but there are some issues with placement, value, and depth.
The metal scratches are little deep in places, particularly on the welding spots noted by Gazu. The bump on the plastic looks a little large in scale.
You have surface wear but it's not consistent across the model. Any raised section will receive a degree of wear, particularly areas that are commonly touched such as the iron sights, which have little wear atm.
Also, there doesn't appear to be much of a metal response from the raw metal beneath the scratched layer.
So i have taken into consideration what Gazu mentioned as well as Jon W and i have done a bit of tweaking, for the moment i am working on the metal then will move on to the other parts. Let me know what you guys think. Have I gone to much damage or was it better before with less.
it's a definite improvement in my opinion, but there's room for further refinement I think.
I think you went a bit heavy on the upper receiver wear.
I've added some feedback/suggestions here, it's in the image but I'll just recap:
Add wear where indicated.
Add scratches to areas indicated.
Check the material of the rear sight is accurate
Material check of the steel, include surface noise in normal map?
Tone down wear on upper receiver.
Check how the damaged plastic looks in reference and try to match it.
Thats an improvement, but i think the difference between the darker and the brighter (peeled?) Metal is some kind to Soft. It looks like that these Metals are using the same Gloss/Spec/Roughness Values?
so i have gone ahead and changed the metal as mentioned, i have worked a little on the magazine but im still a little iffy about it, i have not moved to the plastic yet so its still pretty much the same. let me know what you guys think.
Looks better overall. Wear on magazine is too consistent tho, it's just like a line up the exposed edges and is too thick in places. The lines need to be broken up into smaller sections imo. The wear on the mag needs to be toned down a bit overall. Also try to include unique details like smudges in the gloss map. You could also add some wear to the magazine release catch.
So i have reworked the base material which i felt was a bit off and i have tried Pedro's method for the scratches, went a little bit more subtle with the scratches to start off, and reworked a little on the render in Marmo. loving the feedback from you guys.
That looks a lot better now. I think you can push it further though with some more unique scratches. Try to think of how it would be used and why heavy wear would end up in one spot. Maybe someone dropped it and caused a large scrape in a specific area. This sort of detail will help bring it from base material to that extra level where it tells a story and gives it character, which is important for any hero asset.
Alright, so i am back with a small and hopefully decent update. Loving the comments so far, if you guys think its looking decent i will move on to working on the plastic and hopefully be done with this bad boy.
hey, coming along great, nice improvement on the damages. i noticed you didnt manage to get rid of that issue you showed me that time? any news on that?
other than this, really loving it, the damage now is looking a lot better. keep it up.
Some great improvements! I think the older (green) environment file was much better, the red one hides the details a bit more. You might like to augment the existing lighting scheme with some point lights to help illuminate the darker areas. Read up on three-point lighting.
The wear on the cocking handle is too large and consistent, this is supposed to be plastic and the wear doesn't look right.
The wear on the muzzle is a bit too consistent on the raised sections, I'd tone that down a bit and make it thinner.

(if i may say, add some uniqueness to it, like stickers, sharpie writings, stuff like that. use wisely :P)

@gonzo yeah you are right the presentation could use some work, i will however make a decent presentation once i am fully happy woth it.
@creativehd yeah i basicaly made a rectangles, added them into zbrush and used inflate to make the weldings

But i like your work, too

Have a look at these worn mp5s, note the wear placement, variation, as how the metal underneath responds to light. Also look at how worn the end of the barrel is due to operation.

Just some suggestions, I hope they're of use.
Keep on working, this will be good!
Looks like someone sanded the painted metal down.
I would consider that wear on the receiver and switch it for defined metal scratches with proper form, right now looks like a soup.
edit pic, see how the wear is defined and not all over the place.
But you can do it better, i know that!
This is really turning out great!
