Structured methodology in creating tech bits.

Hey all,

I've been wondering on how do other artist in the industry come up with tech bits. Either the greebles, or the fleshed out parts to a mech..or sci-fi door, panels, nades, furniture, walls etc.

The common thing in my mind is to just gather reference, cut out pieces which you think could fit or work. However, this approach seems quite random (although greebles are random, but what about the other tech bits or shapes found in prominent pieces?).

So is there a certain way to digest shapes and categorize them or bash them to be reproduced in a meaningful way for sci-fi/tech kind of work? Or its just a matter of time collecting reference and developing a mental library of possible shapes for these tech stuff?
