Early WIP on a flintlock pistol, but I wanted to go ahead and get the conversation started. The high poly base is finished. Next step is to take it into Zbrush and create large gouges/scratches in the wood. The wow factor for this piece will come with the ornate filigree that I plan to add. Any thoughts as of yet?
Are you planning to do all the scratches and such in zbrush or will you do them in the textures afterwards?
Model is looking good so far but according to the reference image you have the screw at the front has a flat head while you have made a groove in it.
Cybran, thanks for the feedback. I plan to only do the major scratches in zbrush and let the texture do the rest of the work. For example the scratches spreading from the lockplate.
As for the screw variation I am working with a couple variations of the same firearm, some of which have the flathead. Personally, I feel that the flathead grove allows for an additional place for shadow depth.
The first thing that struck me was how few polys make up some of the parts -
(The left ring looks like a baking error as well, or your texture bleeding over a uv boundary?) The budget for first person weapons nowadays can be way higher, like 10k-20k I think. Fill out some of those curves I'd say, unless you're operating under a strict self-inflicted budget
Other than that the textures are looking good so far. You could push your roughness on the wood wear at the moment as it doesn't stand out (decrease the roughness of the varnished wood, increase the roughness of the wear?)

I fixed the faceting on some on the lock as well as added some contrast and pitting. Thoughts?
