Hello everyone im currently working on an animation that will have some scenes with pretty large shots, since our animations have to be done in maya, I was wondering what is the best way to texture and render a large terrain? Does anyone have any experience with this?
Think like on the scale of a zone in World of Warcraft, I know they use the game engine to texture their environments, but we need to achieve a large scale environment? Maybe break the terrain up into different textures and then just paint each mesh into a certain texture?
Any help is appreciate thank you very much.

I had a chance to take course with Kungfu Panda matte painter and he explained this shot that only the red area are actual 3D. The background is a single still image made in VUE and comp in some clouds.
