Hey everyone!

I've been working on this Joan of Arc piece for a while and would love to get some critiques before I go further.

Right now I'm re-working her legs, trying to get them to the correct proportions and thickness.

Here is my moodboard and a few screenshots!

This is a very cool sculpt! I really enjoy the detailing on the chest piece. Have you considered the bowl cut hair from the top left image in your mood board? To me, it seems very unique and might make the model stand out a bit more. Lovely work so far, really looking forward to seeing some textures.

Cool piece, but I've always pictured joan of arc with short hair. The bowl cut would be a very bold option, but if done right, could really make your model memorable.

    Hey everyone,

    Thank you for your feedback!

Just a quick update, I didn't really do much apart from moving things around and adding a few more details.

I really like the bowl hair cut idea! So I did some rough little sculpts to see how it could look. jhoythottle if I can't pull it off I'll definitely stick with shorter hair, maybe a pixie cut?

I really like the detail that you're adding to the armor, it's a great touch. Not sure if I'm in love with the head/hair right now though. If you're going to do a cut like that I would suggest trying to go for something like in the bottom left picture of your reference IMO.

Concerning bowl cuts: a handful of books and articles have been written on Joan's way of dressing and on her choice of haircut. It was really rather remarkable to contemporaries that she chose to groom her hair and dress like a man; it has been suggested that she tried to create an identity that was somewhere in between masculine and feminine. That was even the reason for her final conviction; she claimed to be receiving instructions from voices or from angels, which is a little hard to prove or disprove. But, the accusers argued, it's pretty obvious that if God were to convey messages to people, He certainly wouldn't do so to women who don't know how to behave like proper women. Thus her claims are lies and blasphemies. After that, she repented, her head was shorn bald and she had to trade in her pants for a skirt. When, a while later, she was seen wearing pants again, that was seen as a sign of her relapse and -- well, you probably know how that ended.

Anyway, sorry for writing this story, but it has always bothered me about depictions of Joan that they do not take this into account and often depict her looking as feminine as one can be with a breast plate; while the historical person was quite literally willing to die for the act of cross-dressing. It seems that we're still not entirely comfortable with the idea six hundred years later.

The type of hair cut that men typically had, and Joan would have had, is the bowl cut sported by Nicolas Rolin in this picture or Henry V in this one.

(I had to read some biographies and the trial documents for a Uni course on Joan of Arc)
