the trend of using photogrammetry?

was reading an article on Polygon, it seems Battlefront also uses this technology, while the result in The Vanishing of Ethan Carter looks astonishing, i also notice a lot of artifects, so whats the ups and downs of using this? from what I understanding, it still takes quite a lot efforts and time to create and tweak, and lacks the ability of working with dynamic lighting?
