Hi guys,
Me and my friend Yibing Jiang just finished a collaberation project together, so we would like to share with you guys here!
My name is Frank Tzeng, currently the lead character artist at Naughty Dog.
Yibing Jiang is the shader artist in our team at Naughty Dog.
The goal of this project is to make the most realistic CG render of Rober Downey Jr out there, Yibing and me have been working really hard on this on our free time every weekend together!
Yibing did texturing, shading and render them out in Vray, also make the hair in Hairfarm base on the fibermesh hair that i made from zbrush and made them even better! Including eyelashes, brows and beard.
I provide the 3d model and gave feedback almost everyweek and paintover/changing 3d model in order to make the renders more realistic and get to the quality we both want.
Here are 3 different of render results: The first one is more dramatic lights to show the shape and anatomy, the second one is lit by lit by neutral HDRI lights, third one is lit by neutral lights with Lambert shaders.
We also created an bonus piece by compositing the render result with ironman digital panel to match the iron man feeling.
Created with Zbrush, 3ds Max, Vray, Photoshop, Mari and Hairfarm.
Hope you guys like it!!

that said, i feel like it could be improved with some more definition/sharpness
maybe it is the shading and lighting, but the topmost image feels almost like on of those realistic 70/80/90ies airbrush pieces, which have been really hard to get crisp/defined due to the medium.
The other images also suffer from this a bit, my guess is, that it is either the shader scattering a little too much.
Or the sculpt could use a little more definition in the creases, specifically the the nasolabial folds and the glabellar ones.
The surface destail wrinkles look pretty spot on and sharp, so i am not sure whats causing this softness effect.
Feels a bit like some porn bloom took over ^^
like check this one http://www.technologytell.com/entertainment/files/2014/10/Iron-Man-4.jpg
but it could totally also be lighting and shading
besides that, does such a shirt exist? it feels odd to me that you have like this oattern difference being crossed by the seam, as opposied to being divided by the seam.
That said, i have absolutely no idea about modern possibilities in cloth making. Maybe it can be woven like that and that seams was implementented solely to be decorative?
Aaaaanyways, great work and this is really nitpicky stuff
Loving this
Everything from the details under the eyes to the texture painting and rendering is insanely well done.

I think that the subsurface scattering is maybe a little too high, it's causing shading on the face to be too soft and that's bringing it into the uncanny valley.
The lighting setup feels like it's purely ambient light, it doesn't feel like there are really any direct or key lights in the scene to generate strong shading.
And visually, it feels a little boring. It's technically incredibly well executed. But a character like Tony Stark is carried through his body language, just a facial portrait is never enough for this character. And even if you're reluctant to bring in the full body, the expression on the face is one of apathy... And that is reflected in the way i feel when i see it, and that's a shame! I don't want to feel "meh" which is the expression on his face currently.
Keep the amazing work!
I don't think the expression needs changing so much as the lighting. Some more dramatic lighting could pull out his current expression a lot!
For me, what really blows me away isn't the hair, but the fuzz on the shirt. All that tiny tiny detail that you just don't think about. Man! So good.
