Has anyone had this problem?
I am trying to apply a smart material to a certain section of my mesh, defined through the colour ID map, but for some unknown reason, the material will not appear at all.
If I apply a smart material which is not allocated by the colour ID it will appear on that section of the mesh though.
I have attached the images that show what I mean.

What happens if you click the black mask and click "ok" right away, does it "Jump back to life" ?
If so, this is a bug that has been fixed with the latest stability patch, available here:

I wish it was as simple as installing the patch I had already installed the stability patch a few weeks ago. I have done it again just to make sure nothing was missed, but still nothing has changed. for some odd reason, I have a few white dots which appear just on the outside of the colour ID.
I have made a change to the original ID Map adding a logo, but its done exactly the same thing, so now I have two areas which will not receive any material. This is the only thing preventing me from signing the project off. I hope there is a something that can be done.
I'm just scratching my head now at this point...
Thanks for letting me know about the OBJ, at least if it happens again I know that this may be the issue. The export settings from Maya I only had ‘Groups’ and ‘Smoothing’ selected.
