exporting from 3ds max to substance and preserving subobject names

I have my mesh and highpoly set up in 3ds max with proper subobject names and i want to link the meshes in to substance to bake maps using the match by name feature.

My problem is that when I export as .obj from 3ds max and link them in to substance, it wipes the sub object names (im assuming this is because theyre not included in the .obj)
I tried also with .fbx which did export the subobj names properly but fbx export from 3ds max is broken in other ways so i cant use that either (primarily messes up the vertex normals)

what format should i use?
