I want to get better at characters and thought I would jump back into this character I started a while ago. I feel that its a good start but I would like some C&C from you guys to help me push it farther. I look forward to seeing what everyone thinks.
I feel like the head needs the most work. The neck seems too thick (in the concept it's about the size of her upper arm) and the shape and angle of the head are off.
Right now, the proportions and shape of the body read pretty well and seem to more or less match the concept. I'd suggest relaxing the solders and bringing the shirt neck/angle of the torso down to match the angle shown (where you can clearly see the circle shape). Compare and consider the stubbiness and length of the arms and legs, perhaps the age could be conveyed just a little better in those areas.
All in all this is a really nice start, though, I love the choice of concept. A lot of interesting subtleties to tackle.
Yeah, kids are really hard! In this one the eyes and the softness of the face while holding the structure will be a challenge. Looks like you nailed the legs. This will be interesting to follow.
I think the body that you have going so far is pretty good, my comment would be on the head. It's the one part that doesn't necessarily match the mood of the concept yet. The chin and jaw line you have are a bit narrow and also the angle of the head is too directly at the viewer (unlike in the concept where it is shying away from the viewer) in my opinion. And the lip, nose and eye shapes are a little bit off. Not by much but enough to be noticeable I think.
Have you overlayed the concept on top of your piece to match up the anatomy?
The tricky part will truly be the eyes. If you are going to match the concept exactly, she'll need those dark bags under her eyes. That'll be hard to pull off without making her look like a creepy old woman. For kids, remember to keep the eyes, ears, and forehead big, the nose small and curvy, and eyebrows on the lighter side. Good luck!
