Baseball Bat (for crit/help)

Here is a quick render of the High poly of my baseball bat. I'm new to a lot of texturing and want to create a realistic bat using PBR techniques. Currently I am stuck on understanding how to apply a decent wood grain and then paint it with polypaint, any tips, hints, tricks, tutorials or even just critique would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

looks good so far. Maybe the wrapping on the handle needs some more work/ details

The sculpt looks good, agree for the handle part.
Other than that I wouldn't know how to match the sculpted wood patterns with the color later, without what seems to me like a large amount of meticulous hand-painting.
I might be off on that, but it 's just a thought, I would prefer to apply a base texture through substance designer or smth similar and keep only the dents etc on the sculpt.

Hey Firith do you mean apply a base wood grain photo texture? Also thanks for all the feedback so far guys, it all helps.

It could be worth using a wood texture and making a height map from it to get the details to match up to the texture (if you're planning on using photo-sourced textures)

Alternatively, if you didn't want to make this a wood baseball, you could mess with PBR for a metallic baseball bat. You already seem to have some of the details ready to go for it.

Quick update from today, I got a nice effect with the woodgrain noisemaker and a polypaint colour fill. Im thinking I will replace the woodgrain with a photo texture and grab a normal/height map from the photo texture before I try out any rendering software. I added some nicks/cuts and general wear to the bat handle, going for a leather look on it as a makeshift grip of sorts. I will add wear and tear over time.

Long time since I posted but I updated the wood after taking some time out with PBR. Handle is almost finished, as always any critique/comment is welcome.

Looks a tiny bit rough - aren't baseball bats smooth usually? Might depend on style as I've never played Baseball in my time. :P

    Definitely looks like wood though!

Yeah I think the strength of the grains in the normals needs a little bit of work. Atm its looking like it needs a pinch more gloss as well. Thanks for the comment Dan, appreciated!

Are you going to do any pine tar? It could add some cool textural differences. And I agree with the comments here about the normals. It's all about finding that sweet spot, but generally bats are smooth to the touch. I'm sure keeping a small amount of normal information in there might be good for cheating a bit extra cool detail, so just keep adjusting settings until you find what works the best.
