Earth Spirits Staff - Tech Question

Taking my first stab at the earth spirit staff as my "learning the process" for building items.
One thing I noticed is that his staff is two pieces and has a 300 poly limit. Does this mean for both halves of the staff? Or for each half? I tried uploading both halves and was counted as being over my poly count.
Any thoughts? If I'm that far over I'm gonna have to rework my whole concept -..-

Ugghhhh well... *toss* guess I learned all I could out of this particular first dota item exploration.
Now I know why sith_happens does his low poly first.
