i'm not a maya nut but generally speaking: icons need to die! when i was using maya for jobs i made a set of shelf icons that were just text labels to get by. the amount of semi-meaningless icons in maya is crazy.
Hehe Thomas, that's so true ... For some reason there is still a widespread assumption out there that "icons are better than text", which really is unfunded. And because of that we end up with the most cryptic stuff in 3D programs ... I am sure it comes from a great intention ("sure enough, artists don't want to read text !") but at the end of the day, having to decipher a weird icon is just a waste of time.
Now to be fair these sculpting icons seem somewhat self-explanatory. I hope the tools are stable.

Customization changes everything ( literally )
rather have text unless the UI is mine and then my icons instantly do the job?
On the downside...
I am then slower as soon as I am in front of someone else's screen.
my brain works with colors and shapes... if there is text i find nothing...
the downside i have to know wich icon is doing what i need...
that works good if i use the same tools over and over again...
but if i have to work with "new" stuff im lost with icons...
on the other side im working with muscle memory most of the time...
markig menues for the win...

the one thing i believe maya still doesn't do and that is such a breeze in max to simplify things is the ability to just change the contents of the entire menu structure easily. this stuff is a crazy maze for people who don't use the particular app 24/7.
for maya i saw that they now have an editor to create custom menu sets but they leave file/edit/etc alone and i don't quite feel like MEL-hacking.
customization means for me that i sometimes do not even recognize max or maya on someone else's machine instantly and definitely cannot really use it there.
