Hi i was wondering if anybody knew of a good reference for triangle limits of current gen assets. I'm working on a weapon in the mindset that it is for a current gen first person combat thingy and i was wondering how much i should limit myself in terms of triangles etc..
Also i know about the differences in triangle counts for first person vs third person or that secondary characters get less triangles etc.. I'm just looking for a general rule of thumb

In this current gen of consoles the "triangle" limit is however many it takes to maintain a good looking silhouette at the viewing angle. If you really want a hard number, Far Cry 4 was using ~15k per weapon and that was shipped to both current and last gen consoles.
Ultimately if you don't have a technical or art director giving you guidelines then it comes down to your best judgement. If you're working on personal portfolio work then trying to stick to a certain tri count shouldn't be your top priority, in my opinion anyways.
