Maya - Gap when mirroring geometry or duplicate special

Hi, My mesh has a gap when i mirror geometry or duplicate special. If mirroring geometry I increase the threshold, then it does merge vertices but then I lose the symmetry which I need for future needs like rigging, or even further modeling, etc.

I have tried the following to no avail:
- open closed maya, deleted history, centered pivot, moved pivot to x = 0, checked that all vertices are at x = 0.
- exported/imported the selected model and tried to mirror again to no avail.

Been fighting with maya for hours now and hopefully some can help and I can get some modeling done.

Model exported to fbx is here if u quickly wanna open it in your maya and see whats wrong.

I looked at your FBX, and the model still has transform values. You need to Freeze Tranformations before Duplicate Special or Mirror Geometry then it should work.

You've gotten into a good habit by Deleting History, but Freezing Transformations is a good idea when doing this sort of stuff too.

Try resetting the duplicate special options window, and try again. You may have tried that, but you didn't mention it.

many thanks for the great advise. I froze transformation and voila. However, I ran into one issue. Basically, I moved the whole object to x,y,z = 0. Then deleted history and froze transforms. It worked, however, I also wanted symmetry but that didnt work. I guess it cos the symmetry line is the issue here since I cant just move the border edge to x = 0 as the half object is there before I mirror or else we have geometry overlap. So is the only way to have symmetry is to move object closer to origin and then snap verts to say x = 0.
