I am in potentially really harmful dilema for some time now. I don't know in which area of 3D art I should specialize in. I claim that I can create pretty much anything given enough time and resources, but I also know that being a jack of all trades doesn't help me much, if at all. I know that I am quite comfortable with 3ds max workflow and despite mine reluctance to admit it, I do much better work on hard surface pieces, and props. My dilema kicked in since I found out that I also want to do various other stuff like characters and other organic modeling, which lead to different areas of expretise in 3d.
How did you guys pick the area to specialize in? I see quite a bit character artists out there (in artstation among other things), so since it looks quite saturated with character artwork, i know it might not be my best option to try and match entire bunch of seasoned verterans in order to get a job in video game industry as one of them.

lots of info on the subject of becoming\being a character artist in those threads
Sometimes the best way is not to pick the path of least resistance. If you don't know what you like, explore the process in the different disciplines. The one you are most passionate about is the one you should pursue.
