Hello polycounters!

My name is Mateusz and I'm Game Design student. Currently I'm working on my bachelor thesis with my group. We are creating a retro futuristic game based on exploration. Second part of my bachelor thesis is a book I need to write. And here is my problem.

Topic of my work is From concept art to 3D model. Do you know any books or interviews covering that topic?
Also my goal is to compare digital and traditional sculpting techniques.
My hypothesis is that they are indeed similar.
Only problem is that I need strong bibliography about this topics.

I would be very grateful for your help!

Cheers.

scott spencer wrote some great books on ZBrush. I think he discusses sculpting techniques there which are similar to real modeling. The idea has been there all along to made 3D modeling more artist friendly by removing technical issues and by creating tools that allow you to emulate traditional ways of working, like this: http://www.dentsable.com/haptic-phantom-omni.htm. Maybe get some whitepapers about previous attempts - that could go into the literature survey part of your paper.

I'm pretty sure if you google enough you'll come across articles where studio heads and art directors talk about their need for hiring traditional artists and/or offering them jobs because of their skills and how they work. Some argue that it's easier to turn them into 3D artists than turning "game artists" into skilled sculptors (now that's a great to topic for debate!) E.g. my own studio has a room for working in traditional media, like clay, so our artists can work on their skills.

    good luck!
