Hello polycounters!

This time I would like to seek some wisdom in this great community, but not related to the arts,
I am looking for other artists that have come to the US to either study or work and have look for a job or done freelance in the US.
My situation is of a foreign student currently here on a f-1 type visa, my OPT (optional practical training) has been recently processed successfully, allowing me to get a full/part time job at a company, withing the next year doing something withing the field that I studied, in my case Game Art, Concept art and Illustration, but in this industry it can take sometime to break in, and in the meanwhile doing some freelancing would be great to build my portfolio but is not allowed on my current Visa status.

I would like to hear some of your stories if you have been trough a similar situation, or if you successfully made it to the industry within that year, I would appreciate some advice.

I am manly seeking some wisdom and advice from someone that has been trough this scenario, did you guys risk it to do some freelance in that time? is it worth it? or should I just focus on my portfolio and improve it (this is happening no matter what but should I do it exclusively?) Im just afraid that I will take to long to do it and miss my year deadline or just ran out of money.

I know I am asking several thing, but please bare with me it's kinda of a tricky situation, but any advice from experience will be greatly appreciated!
