Hello everyone, so just a quick little intro, I studied Game Art at uni and graduated almost 4 years ago, we were taught how to use 3DS Max. After graduating I started to fall into a rut and pretty much a lot of other stuff got in the way and I sadly lost my way with 3D and just didn't have the time and money...
So now I am in a better way to start getting back into this and now with the availability of Maya LT it has made it affordable for me to get back into doing something I loved and still love doing.
Because Maya is different to what I was used to at uni I pretty much have had to start from scratch (which is ok because I am loving Maya LT) So I did some basic stuff just to get to grips with the software, and on top of this learning new ways to texture using NDO and DDO.
My first little test was to create a simple prop nothing to detailed, this was just a quick test to learn some basics and just to see what all this new software is about!
So my first prop was a Trash Can:
I had a blast, I know its nothing spectacular... but it was just nice to see what was available now and a good little starter for me to just be able to move around the UI of all this new software.
So I decided after this to go for something a little more complex but again nothing very difficult as I am still trying to learn. So I decided to start modelling my first Weapon which is a Sawed Off Shotgun.
Its not complete yet, I still have a lot of work to do but I thought I would post it just to show what I'm doing and also to get some valuable feedback and help.
So I modeled a Highpoly first and then my low and baked the normals using XNormal.
Here are the renders of the low poly (1894 tri's) with my normals applied. (I only did very basic high poly detail because I am wanting/going to add things like the bolts etc using NDO)
And then I started just to have a little play around in DDO to start getting a feel for texturing. Now this is just a test so its not complete, I have a lot of issues with the texture but again I am here for valuable and honest feedback, I need to learn.
At the moment I am not 100% happy with the metal I have some tiling issues which at the moment I am not too sure on how to resolve in DDO and the wood on the handle isn't flowing in the right direction. (I think I read somewhere that a rotation tool will be added in the next version of dDO) so I think I will try to save out the handle texture rotate it and reimport it as a new material and maybe I can solve it that way?
I had previously tried having a steel metal with a silver look for the body but it seemed odd so I removed it for these screenshots, I think the body may look better in a similar black to the barrels. I will also be adding other normal details like I mentioned earlier, things like screws/bolts, the handle will also have some grooving/grip (the pump handle)
So thats it for the moment, this is where I am currently at but going to continue to learn. I feel a bit silly posting here because of the standard of work you guys produce which is amazing, but I guess I will never learn unless I get feedback from some of the greatest!
Any feedback will be extremely valuable to me. Thanks everyone!

The shape of them could be tweaked too as the silhouette of the gun isn't established well but that could be because of your middle section. You could add some detail underneath it, that will bring out the silhouette more.
The front part texturing is top-notch but the stock texture looks weak compared to it, just rotate it in Photoshop yourself so it flows the right way.
