Hey guys,

Thought I should start up a bit of an improvement thread/sketchbook for my character work.

Basically looking for crit and feedback as I go through my projects. I will post what I am working on as I go.

Hoping to keep this updated as I do uni stuff and personal stuff.

Thanks :)

This is a personal piece, hoping to get a portfolio anatomy study out of it. WIP

Little bit of a cross over here, I also have a thread with my uni friend as we both are working on our final major project together.
I am doing characters, she is doing environment.

You can see our thread here

    Thanks :)

So decided to join in the #21days challenge
    http://tinyurl.com/pbfhr9e

But instead of doing masters studies every day I will do anatomy studies, either sculpted or painted.

So here was yesterdays quick attempt, lots that needs changing, but just gotta improve today :) Focus on shoulder and upper torso.

    Day 2

Focus on back and a little bit of time spent on the arms too.

Interesting, are you going to start on a new piece each day or are you going to spend some more time on one piece? I have sometimes wondered if more is learned from a lot of short studies or fewer more elaborate ones. I tend to lean more toward actually finishing pieces, doing the whole process and actually pushing myself beyond the first steps, forcing myself to not just repeat the things I already know.

It will also be pretty difficult for us to crit your work if you're going to jump from one to another in the next 20 days ;)

I agree with Theodor, In the past I would start a multitude of smaller projects. I would learn and get better, but it wasn't until recently that I started finishing my pieces that I started really seeing more level ups.

Following what Theodor is saying, I suggest if you're going to commit to this kind of investment, it may be to your benefit if you focus on one specific thing, and complete it.

Ie: If you want to get better at character/ sculpting / anatomy, maybe pick a part of the body to study and hammer it out to completion. And maybe for extra credit, name each muscle and tendon that constructs the major forms and develop your anatomical roadmap.

Good luck, I'll try to tag in and help out when I can.

    Great point.

I guess my main plan was just to spend maybe the first week on a different part of the body each day, just doing quick studies, but then moving onto doing longer studies over a few days at a time.
Yeah I might try to do ecorche after too, I do love me some extra credit ;) haha!

    Thanks a bunch guys :)

Forgot to post yesterday, but here is day 3.

I had a go at doing some ecorche too, really showing me my mistakes. May start one to work on over the next few days later today.

i think gesture and basic proportions are there, maybe you can push it by focusing on bony landmarks and be more accurate with origin and insertion of muscles? :)

    good job keep it up

I'm not an expert, but because everyone sees people on a daily basis it can be easy to notice odd things in portraits or human sculpts. What I notice is the feet. The character's left foot looks turned outwards too much. It's putting the entire body from the waist down at an odd angle for me. Turn the foot inwards.

Hope someone confirm this. Nice thread!

Managed to miss a few days on the anatomy stuff, poop, gonna push to get back on that soon.

But have been having a go at rejigging one of my characters for my portfolio. This is where she is at now. Any feedback, particularly on materials, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Soooooooooooooooooooooo its been about a year since I updated this thread but I said to I would get back into the habit of recording my work here regularly, Partly for my own sanity but hoping to draw on the collective knowledge of the awesome polycount users and hopefully contribute a bit more than what I was before.

I've been up to a lot in the last year, graduated uni, started doing bit of freelance where I could, all the while applying to companies for entry level character positions, not to mention practice practice practice.
I've been trying to learn and study as much as possible as I have found myself with an awful lot of free time on my hands, which is a blessing and a curse.

So you can see my more up to date work on my portfolio and I've realised that this really should be a sketchbook. So I've started one of those instead.

Less likely to post on here now so you can follow my progress on my sketchbook instead
