Maya nhair simulation issues

Hey there,
I've been trying to work out maya's nhair simulation on long/medium length hair, but I'm still having a lot of trouble. First of all, what I'm trying to achieve: https://vimeo.com/20112098
My main problem is the hair either being too stiff or too crazy, mainly on up and down movements. I've went through maya's help file, sort of have an idea what all the settings do, but I'm completely lost as to how to make the hair behave the way I want it to after fiddling with it for days now.

Is there something I might be missing or am I just not getting those magical correct settings?
