Maya Problem (Mesh > Reduce Tool)

Hello, I have a model smoothed with "Convert > smooth preview to polygon" but now I want to do a retopology and I tried using the "Reduce" tool, after reducing for about 70% it looks fine until I start deleting some extra edges and it just get broken.

If there is another tool that works better I'd love to know

could you post a wireframe...?
i would suggest do the retopo by hand... its much cleaner... an in this case its an easy task...

Here, the sequence is Smoothed > 70% reduced > reduce without some edges

just remove some more edges by hand and set hard edges where you need them...
