For Epic Games so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Game Engine, that whosoever believe in him should not be left moping, but have everlasting video games.
Man, the news of the engine going free is already awesome enough, and they even top it off with a $30 refund ! That's a very classy move on their end, well done Epic
Tis extremely generous of them, considering the price of Unity Pro (either upfront or sub), the Unity guys are gonna have to try REAL hard to beat this (if they even can), though I too am wondering about UE5, though i haven't checked out 4.7 yet, as when i installed 4.6, my hardware struggled with it
I've been sticking closely to Unity since I love working with C# in comparison to C++ but I guess now there's no excuse to not dive back into the engine. I really appreciate everything Epic has done to push this engine, hopefully the 5% royalties will be enough to keep them in business.

Indeed, while it is great they're offering this for free, it is a big risk, as the engine subs have been a major source of income for them.
Although, this does eliminate the whole "What about modding support for our games?" concern some people (myself included) have been wondering about on the unrealengine forums. Since now, devs won't have to worry about stepping on legal toes implementing moddability in their projects.
I'll have to give it a try, I used Unreal a lot more back when it was free (UDK) then the subs kicked in making me second guess whether I really wanted to update or not.
Also is this an attempt to pre-empt the Unity 5 announcement at GDC? They have stated PBR functionality is available for Unity free.
Thank you EPIC. I was about to resub to get that sweet 4.7 update, instead I get it for free (and all future updates) and 30$. I'm hoping some of those marketplace content gets a price drop down to 30$.
Don't know what to think about it, hope it doesn't change the balance too much, cause Epic seems to be aiming for a strong position in the indie market.
One the other hand I've been testing the latest Unity beta and I've lost all hope for it.
Enlighten is a complete disaster in terms of workflow and the quality in realtime isn't that great.

It would make game development only focus on making games!

I just signed in and hit the +Add versions button.

Literally in the same boat as you first got UE4 at 4.12 not updated since.
