Alright, I don't exactly know how this is happening, but when my object is unsmoothed, it looks like this:

and then when i hit the 3 key, the model looks like this

and when i unselect, the model seems to divide itself out of nowhere in between the bicep and the shoulder like this

The edges have become perforated as if there are faces sitting on top of them (Lamina faces). when i perform a mesh clean up, and smooth again, i still have the same problem.
I'd continue editing the mesh, but when i try to edit the mesh while smoothed, maya crashes on me as if i have too much going on in the scene. does anyone know what the problem is and how i can fix it?

you can also try updating to SP5 and see if that fixes it.
