I applied to a company for a Game Artist position, and I send them my portfolio which is mainly environment and hard surface.
And now they give me an art test which is a Character??
What to do?
I told them that I will do it but I dont know how much good it will be, my experience with characters is really low.

Do you really want to work there and think you can do a decent job making a character? It might be a waste of your time if you don't think you could make something decent.
I dont know if I should say their name, but the division where I applied is a small studio, they work on social games.
I want to get into characters but not like this when I have only two weeks.
I dont think its a mistake, I had skype interview and the interviewer(not technical person) asked me what I want to do more, characters or textures (weird question) and I said textures, so I guess they want to test me how will I do with character.
Generalists are hard to find for these companies, so they tend to cast their net wide to even people who haven't demonstrated skill in every area, in case you are able to do it.
it could turn out better than you anticipate.
Not saying that is the case here, just thought I'd share my experience. Like most have said, they're probably looking for a generalist. A little odd though that they weren't explicit about it from the beginning.
I need to hear the longer version of this story.
Lol this please
i mean i said everything there is. i was contacted by a big company if we would like to work with them on a future project, i said sure and we started negotiating. Later they asked for an art test so they know if i could deliver the quality.
And then they gave me a bunch of reference images, all done by me, asking if i could match the quality.
Your answer: "Yes. Yes I can..."
sure it was, but it didn't count, well we got a good job out of it and the test was paid, still kinda pointless
