Cutting Holes into Cylinder

Hey guys,
i got a little problem right here. i always cut holes on flat surfaces with no problems. but now i need to do it on a cylindircal shape and i got some problems. i want to have holes like the barrel got. you see it on the picture below:
the cutting is not the problem but shaping it with support edges and giving thickness brings me to streching and other issues. maybe you can tell me how to get good looking ones.
