I think the models you are choosing are really bad to model.

    http://cgi.tutsplus.com/tutorials/creating-a-low-poly-ninja-game-character-using-blender-part-1--cg-16132

If you download the model from here you get this
    http://cdn.tutsplus.com/cg/uploads/legacy/411_Blender_LP_Ninja_PT1/Reference.jpg

Avoid using your own character models. I personally think they are really bad taste. The first model is pokemon and the next model is a goblin who looks like a drug addict and this makes you seem immature for your age.

Anyway, go to the monthly noob challenge, try to complete one of the shields and then do the next monthly noob challenge. Go do the weekly hard surface challenge to get basic skills down instead of tackling complex models.

If you want to get better at concept art and want to do your own models, then go to ctrlpaint.com start from the first videos and go through them all. Watch some of FZDSCHOOL video or look at other concept art and try to copy them.

In summary you can probably fix all the bad stuff in your modelling by just practising more. But, I will add do the fucking monthly noob challenge or at least attempt to do it. Avoid coming up with your own concepts are they really bad taste. Put more hours in.

    Hey Dude,

really appreciate you enthusiam, but you should go one step back and learn how to properly model you lowpoly stuff, advance to highpoly modelling and sculpting. You will need alot of anatomy to create convincing models.
Creating Characters is one of the most difficult things.
Rushing from 0 to 100 wont help you at all.

That being said, keep on going!

edit: pangaea is right in choosing references! Use some concepts of people that are used to work in a professional environment. You will just recreate the mistakes you did when you painted your concepts.

Looks like my old stuff! haha.
What you should do is start with the basics, dont rush ahead to all this stuff, as tempting as it may be.
if you're learning to model, you should frequent these forums, and always ask questions. 3Dtotal.com also has abunch of great tutorials as well.
Again, i think this bares repeating, start from the basics. Just model human body parts, animals, whatever. Keep modeling until you get tired of it, then model some more. The worst thing you can do is stop.

If you're trying to do props/enviroments, then you practice modeling things you see around the house. Theres a weekly hardsurface challenge on the forums, the people that participate generally are willing to answer your questions so let er rip!.

So yeah mate, good luck, and keep modeling. Trust me, within a year if you keep being diligent, you'll look back on this post and say. "What on earth was I doing? "

As the others have said before, choose a concept that has god design that is not yours. Something that is simple in terms of silhouette. Practice recreating that. Your design skills are not quite there yet. The goblin looks interesting, just not pleasing.

Also, your end goal should be to get these character assets into a game engine, and rendered in a game engine if you want to do game art.

Hey Decie, I agree with the others on this. You need to build a solid foundation before stepping into harder territory. As far as your attempt at modelling characters goes, you need to focus on proportions, topology, etc.

I'd give the monthly challenges a go. The hard surface challenges are a good start. Just keep pushing on an you'll learn as you go, there's a lot to absorb.

Also, seeing as you're Irish. There's a facebook group called "Irish game artists" that you should join. You'll probably have to message the admin first though.

Also Could I get feed back on this image, I need to have a portfolio ready soon another college and I was thinking of showing my design/modelling process of my character. Here Is my half-ass go at last months Noob Challenge, I didn't do enough research on shields, didn't get much references images, no drawings before going in to 3D and things started to go against me in Mudbox so here it is in it's simplest from with default textures.
