It seems as if the original normals that I input to DDO are overwritten/painted over the more materials I add and work with within DDO and it causes the result to look more "flat." If this requires that I decrease the intensity or opacity of the normals of other layers then it would be a sad trade off because I would still like to give certain details a normal boost while retaining most of the original normals.

This could be due to the fact that some of the normals that are above the original input in the layer stack are set as "normal" instead of "overlay", maybe that is what is happening here?
