Curve brush broken in 4r7?

So previously I used to be able to use the curve stroke with just the standard brush or inflate etc to create cleanly tapered strokes by adjusting the size variable in the curve modifier.
In 4R7 I can't get this to work, did they add a step? The only time the brush will stroke in curve mode now is if intensity and size are both turned off and then it still doesn't stroke along the curve, instead it behaves the same as if you weren't using curve at all.
Anyone else running into this?
