Remove lighting info

A coworker of mine was talking about inverting the same image and setting a blending mode to lighting info in an image. Does anybody know about this? or have useful tips on the subject?

If you duplicate a layer, blur it, invert it and set it to overlay it can remove lighting info, but it's not perfect and can take a bit of fiddling.

They might have been talking about the image mode "Lab Colour" which uses lightness as a colour channel. I've seen that used to even out the lighting of an image before.
