Hi all! I've been modelling for a couple of years now but I'm not too hot with the technical side of 3ds max, I just model cute low poly stuff and cross my fingers that I'm doing it right haha.
I have a quick question. A character that I have modeled has a fur collar which has a lot of 'hair' cards (in this case fur cards) to fluff it out. I'm looking to rig the character now, but the fur collar is getting in the way of my skinning. I'd select it and move it out of the way to easily skin around the torso, but the collar is made up of so many fur cards that it's a massive hassle to go through and select them all so I can move the whole collar out of the way.
So, is the any way to group a set of objects inside a complex object? The character and his clothes and accessories are all a single object, and I want to know if I can have something like a sub object for the collar which will allow me to select it and all the fur cards in a single click so I can easily manage and move it. But still contained within the overall character object.
The elements are already all attached together, and I cannot Group/Link the cards to the collar since again it's all one object.
Thoughts?

1. Look up Named Selection Sets. They let you create sets of objects or sub-objects to select quickly. Its on main toolbar.
Or
2. Under the skin modifier go into Editable Poly. Select the fur cards and hide them in the Edit Geometry rollout. Get out of sub object mode. Then in the skin modifier they will be masked from selection.
Or
3. If you haven't gotten far, i would detach the fur cards to a seperate object. You're going to want a separate material for the alpha cards anyway. No need for it to be all one object.
If you need more info on any of these, just let me know.
I already hide things in Edit Geometry, but it was just so much of a hassle to have to select each fur card when I needed to move the entire collar around to skin more easily. And I've already textured the cards, originally as a separate object, then attached onto the main body with a Multi/Sub object material. Named Selections were just what I needed!
