Bein a Star Wars Nut and loving the Podrace in Phantom Menace, i had to build one..
Well.. i chose Ben Quadinaros Quad-Endined Pod, that doesnt make it past the Starting Grid.
References are a Bitch.. straig away.. it´s all different.
ILM build like 3 Versions of that thing, and even the Maquette is different than the CGI Model.
So here we go..
It´s still WIP..
"Low"-Poly Model with basic Diffuse and Normal Map applied, 4k each.
The whole thing weights a hefty 250k Polys.
Will add Ben Quadinaros and the cables.
Anyways.. Pics:
Without Diffuse
Wires.
Granted, i could optimize more.. but i´m a lazy sod and just working on it on some free hours
during lunchbreak or evenings..
More too come

Quality is amazing though! Even though I would have preferred seeing Dud Bolt's pod.
Will make some more pods in the Future..
Roughly blocking out the diffuse texture on the engines.
Still have to add discoloration of metals, dirt, grease and grime..
It crashed right at the start. Engines uncouple and boost in every direction.
I need a no brainer.. Too much Creativity Drain at Work.
So i try to recreate it.
Here´s the "real" thing:
It´s just seen for a few seconds, hence hard to get images of.
.....I'm trolling lol. i hate TPM.
Here we go.. Few hrs of work. Copy and Paste Layers from the Engines.
Adjusting the dust, spatter, downwash and flame pattern took up the most.
It´s still missing the chipped metal, crud and some work on the buttons and seating..
Eventually might change the blueish tint to the movie´s tan color..
The whole dirt etc looks rather subtle in the diffuse, but will pop more when i work on specs and gloss.
Sidenote.. the Cockpit Diffuse is 666Mb Big.....
There´s some normal errors in Marmo, that arent in 3dsMax.. no idea whats wrong with that..
Think, i´ll pause on the Pod, once i´ve made some touch ups and then focus on creating the pilot and a small environment.
Whatcha think?
I don't know how you managed to do that with only some images from the movie. If you want some detailed references next time you could check some books like this one :

It's just amazing. I'm not sure they have the pod racers though.
@Tex..
Nothing much usefull in that particular book for my pod.
Star Wars Chronicals The Prequels is much better..
Features any vessel and character in the first three episodes and shows maquettes, props and 3d models from all angles and orthographic perspectives..
Let down.. pics of the BT310 Podracer are shitty tiny...
Others got a whole page of nice renders and propshots..
Seems i´ve went retard and forgot to flip normals. Lookin right now.
Fixed scaling, added energy coupler and cables.
Some more pics:
Still gotta add some small discoloration to the engine pipes and do so spec work here and there.
Gonna start on the Pilot pretty soon tho.
Gotta decide what environment to put it in. Mos Espa Stadium might be the most known, but in the Game it started in a pretty cool Vulcano Stage...
I think I will go load me up some n64 pod racer.
Keep up the great work.
Yep.
At least, with Ben´s Pod.
ILM CGI Model.
I may be off, but I can't help but feel like the cockpit is a little small compared to the engines. Even looking at movie ref that you posted, looks on the small side to me? Maybe its just because of perspective.
Engines are 4.5 meters, cockpit 2.7ish meters
Looks somewhat right to me.
It´s a fairly small pod, compared to the rest.
Is it my or do they not look like they are crossing in this pic?
They aren't powered up there, you can even see the terminal things that the energy beam comes out of in the other ref in that picture (angled in the correct way to be cross shaped).
Even Ben´s Pod is different in the CGI and Maquette Version.
They dont look crossed in that pic, in all the other versions they are.
I think it adds a bit more strangeness to it. Thats why i´ve kept it.
Dont want it look too dirty. There´s alot of surface noise going on already.
Started on blocking out Ben.
Straight forward, nothing tooo difficult.
Started on some PBR adjustments in UE4.
Havent done any fancy things... just dropped it into the default setting.
