The substance seems a little goopy, for lack of a better term. I think it could use a little more roughness variation, and the splatter could stand out a bit more.
In my opinion i think i liked the first one better. The variation in your new version seems a bit off, like it just rained on some parts but others have been drying for awhile. I suppose this could happen in a desert but i don't think the wet parts would pop out that much then since it rains very little in a desert.
Thanks for your comments! Just using some pics from dirty soldiers as reference, as these substances are meant to be used for such a character.

Great start so far! I agree that the materials do seem to come across more plastic like the mud. Right now your materials are in that odd place between "Wet looking" and dry. I'd recommend pushing it further in either direction.
You don't seem to be taking to repeated critique very well.
The material definition isn't really there yet. Mud usually has localized areas of pure wet and puddle vs dryer areas. Yours are not really communicating either wet mud, or dry dirt.
Try working on the frequency of detail and massage the gloss map a bit more for localized analytical wetness definition.
thanks, everything except footprints and insects is procedural. I think the insects are so small, they could be done procedurally easily, the footprints would be a bit more complicated

Are you using any reference?

@ Marshkin: thanks for your input! a lot of mud is in that odd place between wet looking and dry

@Jennajenga: - I´ll try to create something that lives up to the thread title maybe some white stuff on a mirror or so
first pic is showing main graph
second pic is showing sub graphs for tire tracks
I hope one day Marmoset will allow all maps to be accessed by Substances! That would make tweaking so much easier!
