Whoa! A nice new empty forum!
Maybe not the greatest animation wise, but here are some birds I made for
SNOW
and an ingame test in cryengine:
It's been so long since I last did any animation stuff so I would love some crits! I found I had to exaggerate a lot of the movements to get them to read better at a distance ingame.

Its just beating with the wings up and down. The whole flock looks cool, and the flap is less noticeable.
But think of it more like paddling. The downstroke is also somewhat forward, and in level flight or when trying to gain altitude, the wing rotates relative to the body so the leading edge of the wing points more towards the bird's belly. Then on the back stroke the wings retract a bit, most noticeably at the "wrist" joint, and flit up quickly to avoid generating negative lift.
It might be easier to think of the motion of a birds wings while flapping to be like a swimmer doing the butterfly. There's rotation as well as downward movement.
The swarm does look neat though.
