I am having same problem with the smoothing group on object exported from 3ds max 2014. There are two screenshots from Max viewport and 3DO. And one screenshot from Max OBJ export window.
Your application needs to be able to export the normals. Zbrush for example can't (no matter what you do ) and Lightwave, you have to tell it to. Although it's called smoothing normals (or something like that).
Thank you Gordon for the additional info! Vipera, just to clarify, smoothing groups should be retained as long as the actual Normals are exported as well. Let me know if it works as expected for you.
Thank you Teddy. Exporting with checked in normals helped to solve the problem with the smoothing groups in 3DO but exporting with normals will significantly increase export time on big models though.

These settings work flawlessly for me regardless of which version of dDo I'm using (Legacy or Suite)
If you want to use that .obj not only 3DO (xnormal or other modeling/baking software) I recommend to switch off all Optimize section.
