I'll be honest, I'm trying to find some lighting inspiration for a fight scene. I was hoping you guys would have some suggestions of one's that you think are cool.
So... Anyone want to help a guy out?
i always look for holywood movies for inspiration when it comes to lighting
maybe google some scenes from movies that cover the same topic or mood your aiming for
Jeff Cronenweth is one of the cinematographers I admire most; take a look at the basement scenes of Fight Club. If you want to go into technical details, have an eye for practical light sources - they are above the crew and they lit the scene almost completely, always illuminating the two characters that carry the narrative. The rest of the crowd is lit two stops below these two (darkly), but are also separated from the environment behind them.
But it all depends on what you are trying to tell. If you want to portray a raw scene, for example, you should be looking into exposing the details of the skull of the characters, giving them that classical ghostly appearance. You could also keep the visual focus in the action by illuminating the environment behind the characters and keeping them in complete darkness, placing lonely lights each now and then to give a clue on who's who.
Don't forget about the environment also. The fight between Morpheus and Neo gives a sense of nobility because of the environment the action takes place in and the clothes they wear. You might want to think about where it all should happen. That environment will certainly help you illuminating it.
There's the first fight scene in The Book of Eli, you can find it on YouTube.
it's all silhouetted but you can perfectly make out what's happening. The lighting adds a lot to it.
