Wrapping a chainmail around a mesh

Hey guys,
Does anyone know if there is still a tool to flatten a polygon mesh by deforming it into its UV layout in world space? And then use it to wrap around any patterned geometry?
I wanted to do something like this:

I use Maya most of the time. I could do it Max, but I'm not very proficient, I only use it for modelling.
