How can i improve my 3D works (general question)

Hello Polycount,

and secondly sorry for my aproximative english

so, I'm french i'm studying IT (it's borring...) and i begin to learn 3d since almost two year ago now.
later I would like to work in the CG "industie" like the most of you and I ask myself many question in fact.

How much time did it take to you too "be good" ? (get you first job in the domain)
Should i go in an art school ?
Should i choose quickly "a way", I mean have to choose a subject like modeling, ligtning or animating.
i'm bad at drawing I now i can still learn it but is it really usefull to take hour and hour to draw ?

here what i recently do, feel free to critique and say where i suck :)

Tackle some more complex subject matter. Find some reference that looks like it'll be a real challenge for you.

So far, none of your examples are bad, but none of them are particularly impressive.

You can learn a lot when you just dive straight into something complicated.

it's what i try to do but it mostly end by a part of headphone a file of a bed or a ugly bird...
i've also tryed to modele element from blueprint but they're alway something that let my project unfinished...

otherwise I work on cinema4d and i find this soft awesome, I don't understand why this soft is merely use by professional except for motion design ?

If you want to become a game artist, then you should be creating game assets, and getting them into a game engine. Some ideas here http://wiki.polycount.com/wiki/PortfolioContents

If you want to become a movie effects artist, this is not the right website.

Cinema 4D has some great features, but because most game developers use Maya or 3ds Max, you should become comfortable with these.

Reference and practice. Model this stuff a bunch! Start small and level up. Think about it like an RPG game. Low level to high level stuff. Do the hard surface challenge stuff

    As far your direct questions:
It took me 2 years after school to get a job as an Environment Artist. I was trying for 1.5 years to be a Character Artist though. So 6 months I suppose.

Art school? Only if you only excel around other like minded people or need formal regimented assignments. There's plenty of successful people on here that went to art school, non art school, no school, old school. It all depends on the person. If you don't know maybe try for 6 months and see if you're making progress. If not maybe look into schooling further and see if it's your thing.

Don't speed through things. Your brain and artistic eye needs time to develop. Just keep working. Set goals and stick to them.

Yes start drawing. Even simple spheres, etc. It always helps. I'll draw out models sometimes or texture maps. Just to see how to approach stuff.
