I've been really interested in PBR workflow the industry is heading in and the studio I work at will probably have no need for such next-gen content creation, so I've been working on this little prop to ease myself into the process and learn some of the software involved in my spare time.

Any comments and critiques are welcome, though I am going to call this one done and hopefully move on to something a bit more involved.

Made using Maya, xNormal, Photoshop and Substance Painter

Substance Painter is pretty amazing and is a tool I've been dreaming about for awhile.

Your textures need a bit of love. The rust to paint transition feels a bit sloppy. Can we see texture sheets?

Hi, your paint material has too much bump in areas where there shouldn't be, try adding the bump near where the rust would bubble. I would also add more noise to the rust. Right now it looks like painted on copper. Also the red paint looks to new, I would add some tiny scratches and rough it up a bit! :D

I would also add rust where the cap locking mechanism slides.

Other then that, it looks good :).

Thanks for the feedback! I might make a few tweaks here and there, but my main goal was to see if i could figure out what the hell I was doing when it comes to PBR. So much more involved that the old school bump, spec metheod but obviously the results of what others are doing with PBR speak for themselves.

I used this image for the main reference. Red could def be a bit more dulled. I also had another great reference image showing rust under the paint only in some splotches instead of everywhere there is rust, but cant seem to find it.

Good start! I noticed a few things with your high and low poly though.

A - The top of the handle could be more rounded right here.

B - The transition from the handle to the main canister needs a bit more attention. You can try to use this weld brush in zbrush on the high poly to get a better transition

C - You're missing the circular extruded bit at the base of the cap extrusion is.

Maybe try lowering the glossiness of the paint too? See how that looks.

I think a simple win here would be to make the paint smoother. That way the roughness really belongs to the rusted areas and would give you some nice separation.

Also, the round pin thing needs at least twice as many triangles in it. :)
