3DS Max question about creating a model from a background image

I'm a complete noob and very new at this so please bear with me.

So I am using 2014 3ds max to create a shotgun model for Fallout: New Vegas. In this verion of max they took out the lock pan/zoom function so I am using a workaround. I am using plane plus to use a plane as my background image. The problem is when I use this way vs the lock pan/zoom function, the image plane shows up in my bottom right panel, whereas before only what I was creating would show up.

So my question is: Is there a way to make my plane invisible in the bottom right panel? Or am I stuck just modeling it with the background in the way?
