You have to paste the full link to your youtube video, the same as in the address bar, something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-pRqzuY9cg. When you preview or submit the post it should show the embedded player.
Note that if you want to prevent the link from becoming an embed on your post, you can paste the link, highlight it and then add an "Url" format to it. This forces the address to show, instead of the embedded player:

Perhaps you're experiencing this: the youtube embed doesn't show on the preview when creating a thread, it only shows on previews of subsequent posts.
If you're creating a new thread and putting clean links to youtube videos inside the url tags, it will work. It just won't appear on the preview.
It's best to choose 'go advanced' anyway - just to ensure that your post will display how you want it to.
It needs to look like "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiwbgopIh2Q" The s doesnt seem to matter anymore, but you cant have all that crap after the video reference number.

If you click the Toggle HTML View button,
you'll see the Youtube address also includes the URL formatting:
This has to be removed for the embedding to work, it has to be the address alone in plain text only. The part you want is shown in black text above.
If you right-click > Copy Link Location and paste it also embeds, since it comes as plain text like you said.
