Does anyone know how far can you decimate a mesh to get the lowest possible polygon count without a noticeable loss in details for baking?

No, seriously: it depends. You can have your highpoly sphere with 100 polygons and decimate it or one with 10 mio polies and decimate it. Just try it. If your decimated mesh looks good, the normal map will be ok as well.

I thought there should be a good ratio of polycount to quality, but I guess not.
