3D Printing Advice

I am currently working on a project where I need to do some 3D printing for. I am a college student and have access to our schools printer for free. I just would like to know what sort of preperationg I need before I can print.
...Pretty much, what file type does it need to be? Does it matter how many polys I have and any other tips for printing.
Here is what I am planning on printing. We are just prototyping right now. the phone case is for a samsung tab and the long pointy thing is not going to be printed, only it's housing.
