It doesn't act as a new kind of deformer. It uses the Bend deformer and simply streamlines a process that we do quite often in hard surface modeling. Its meant to save time in a production workflow by speeding up iteration and UX
Pretty cool. I´ve always used a combination of a lattice deformer + bend deformer (the latter deforming the former deformer) for doing this! But this gets rid of some steps.
