Good luck! If you're only just starting VFX and especially in UDK, I highly recommend the ImbueFX tutorials by Bill Kladis. Really great starting point as I'm sure many on these forums would agree!

It's been awhile since i started. It takes time to study and build both at the same time. So here is my concept and process for my first spell so far.

As you can see, my first concept is Eye of Sauron from one of my favorite film, Lord of the rings. I'm not sure I'm still qualified for this contest by referring concepts that already existed in the films.
