SCHOOL OF CREATIVE ARTS

The School was set up in its present form in Sept 2009 and currently has approximately 2,300 undergraduate, postgraduate and research students. Courses and tutors are organised into 5 academic groups – Design, Visual Arts, Screen, Music and Postgraduate Centre for Creative Arts. There is a broad spread of courses with details available on the University website.

The work of the School has developed in ambition, scope and scale since the early 1990s, at which point the School joined the University. The School is based on the College Lane site in 5 buildings clustered on the west of the site and the John Lill music centre nearby. The School has an active and lively environment, based around a café and professionally-curated gallery in the Art and Design Building.

The School has approximately 10% international students and has three important overseas partnerships that have been established for some years in Moscow, Kuala Lumpur and on-line and this work is expanding, with more academic staff involved in these activities each year.

The School is a Strategic Business Unit of the University which gives control of its own budgets. It is one of four Schools within the Faculty of Science, Technology and Creative Arts.

The Schools current objectives include:
• To further build excellence of its courses and opportunities for students
• To increase student engagement in the running of the School and improvement of general student experience
• To increase student success in employability, jobs and social enterprise
• To maintain international excellence ratings from RAE2008 within the next Research Excellence Framework 2013
• To increase and advance staff research activities across pure and applied research as well as commercial activities
• To increase strategic alliances with key external organisations
• To increase the proportion of non-HEFCE activities and income
• To further develop research, commercial and teaching collaborations both external and internal to the School including multi-professional projects across courses
Recent efforts in the School have concentrated on long-term industry-relevance of courses, developing the social environment, research activities, expansion of commercial activities supporting staff in projects, development of more placement and work experience for students – amongst other work.

All postholders are required to undertake research in the discipline, through academic research, professional practice or commercially-applied activity. There is a variety of support available for this work. Fractional postholders are required to attend the University during the teaching year during periods of other duties, so as to engage fully with students, other tutors and the work of the School. Staff starting who are new to teaching are required by the University to undertake a CPAD course, Postgraduate Certificate of Education which is recognised by the Higher Education Academy. This is usually undertaken over the first two years in post. There is usually an allowance given.

A variety of information about the School, its courses and research is available on University websites.

Lastly the School has a welcoming atmosphere to both staff and students, retaining something of the character of its early art school past. The work of the School emphasizes collaboration and the development and contribution of all talents from tutors and students alike, as part of our success now and in the future. Collaborations between students across course boundaries are growing, as are those between tutors across School boundaries.
