I am really hoping that one of you guys/gals will know something about this, So at work I am having to edit some terrain based on an outdated DEM (digital elevation model)/height map and make it look like the new area. I am needing to know if anyone knows of any software that can do this process rather quickly. Thanks guys

World Machine is pretty awesome though, tons of control there for editing heightfields.
I didn't think max could export back to DEM or keep the meta data that I need it to keep. So yeah I could probally figure out how to do it in Max but I would lose the Meta Data, Do you know if world machine will hold the meta data of a file?
What does the metadata look like, and is it stored directly in the DEM? You (or a grogrammer friend) might be able to write a tool that strips it out, stores it in a XML or somesuch format, then re-integrates it after you edit the visual data.
and I've used L3DT before: http://www.bundysoft.com/L3DT/
Also, you should let me know when you want to go out back for a break. Haha!
Hey Dude, just read that yeah L3DT does support DEM...give it a go.
