ZBrush Polypaint Artefacts

Hi people,
I'm having a strange issue in ZBrush with polypainting causing artefacts making it very difficult to work with. They only seem to have started happening recently on the model.
I am using Layers, but I have all previous layers hidden to make things clearer for myself.
Every time I paint there seems to be artefacts being uncovered in random places that only get painted over when I use 100% pressure on my tablet which I do not want.

Image before I do anything:

Image when I paint. Notice the painting underneath in the brushed area has become jagged edged and much more pronounced with artefacts.

My layers pallet. You can see the other two layers (a tattoo and some skin pore definition) are both hidden.

The mesh is on Solo mode by the way.

Thanks,
- Ricky

I think the layers themselves might actually be the problem. I stopped using them when I noticed weird spotting happening as I painted over existing polypaint data that was not part of the active layer.

If someone else can confirm: layers don't work properly with polypaint.

Ugh, crud, I remember finding solutions to this problem back when I was doing sculpts daily, but since I stopped using it so often I've kinda forgotten...
Polypainting with layers is great and works fine, Bartalon, but if I remember correctly there's another issue at play here.

Just in case, though, if you bake the other two layers, then make a new one and paint, does this issue still occur?

Good to know. Group me in with OP then, I'd like to know a solution too :)

I hope the solution does not involve baking down existing layers. That would kind of defeat the purpose...

Hey thanks for the replys :)
Shortly after I posted this I figured out what was wrong. It was the layers and here's how I fixed it:

If you have a new layer up with REC on, it all works fine. If you turn off REC to stop working on that layer, but then need to add something else on top of the painted information of that layer, the problem happens. Turning REC back on for an existing layer and trying to paint over the current information causes artefacts.

If you bake all layers, it is fixed, but very much not ideal...

Work around and probably how they are supposed to be used then:

If you decide after switching REC off on a layer, that you need to add more to it, make a new layer above it, work on this new layer, then merge it with the old layer when you're done. This way you still have layers and only the amount of them you need if you remember to merge the layers you want to be together.

Still kinda silly though. At 3am it just frustrated me xD Thanks again! <3

    EDIT:

-.- Maybe not.... been working on it for a while and suddenly the issue has come back. The only way that seems to get rid of it permanently is to bake down all layers and stop using them all together.... :\

sorry to necro old post, but this issue is still happening. any workaround as poly paint would be superb if this issue was fixed?

seems that when i lay down my first stoke, it work fine , but when i make anohter stroke on top of it, it highlights the boundary of the first stroke with a jagged edge.
i can pain it out, but then that causes more jaggies and weirdness
